Google Crafts Search Advertising Tutorial

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

Google's market cap is right around $185 billion at the moment, making the search giant a pretty good authority on the value of search advertising. It's fitting, then, that Google has begun to offer a free video presentation called "The True Value of Search."

Has search advertising helped your small business? Let us know in the comments section.

The company's ulterior motive - "buy search ads!" - is obvious enough that we won't spend too much time on a disclaimer. Otherwise, this looks like a decent way for small business owners to learn more about the online advertising environment.

A description of the presentation in the AdWords Online Classroom states, "This is an online market insights presentation on understanding the value of search marketing beyond direct response. The session will look at market research, case studies and general information covering latent conversions, search for branding and integrating search with offline marketing channels."

Then a post on the Inside AdWords blog added, "[W]e'll introduce you to the ROPO effect (Research Online, Purchase Offline), latent conversion and how search is involved in the buyer's research and purchase journey. We'll discuss search as part of the broader media and marketing mix as well as search for branding and how to integrate it with offline marketing. You'll even see some real life examples of how search campaigns have driven offline sales."

Consider taking a look if this sounds interesting. Again, it's free, and no live presenter will be offended if you shut down the video partway through.

Do you think Google's insights can be valuable to small businesses? Fill us in by leaving a comment.

Employment Rises In November

Mike Sachoff By Mike Sachoff

The Conference Board Employment Trends Index (ETI) increased in November for the second consecutive month. The index now stands at 99.0, up from October's revised figure of 97.6. The index is up 9.3 percent from a year ago.

"The disappointing employment numbers released last Friday are at odds with most of the leading indicators included in the Employment Trends Index," said Gad Levanon, Associate Director, Macroeconomic Research at The Conference Board.

"While we are not expecting economic activity or employment to grow rapidly anytime soon, we do expect employment to continue to moderately increase, following the trend of recent months."

Solve Persistent Problems With Trend Micro's HijackThis

Solve Persistent Problems With Trend Micro's HijackThis

Dear Member,

Sometimes, a troubled computer will remain so even after repeated scans with all sorts of security programs. At this point, a closer look courtesy of Trend Micro's free HijackThis utility may be in order.

HijackThis looks through a user's computer for ways in which malware has changed their settings. It'll then spit out a log file for you (or a knowledgeable friend) to look over. This isn't the fastest or easiest way to resolve an issue, but it's an option to keep open when faced with a problem that's especially stubborn.

IN CASE YOU MISSED AN ISSUE:

It's hard to accomplish anything when you're being peppered with distractions. Ads, which attempt to both sidetrack you and waste your money, are arguably the worst kind. So consider using Ad-Aware Free to protect yourself.

Ad-Aware can scan for data-mining, advertising, and tracking components. Free updates ensure that its definitions are current, and it's capable of removing whatever undesirable elements it finds, as well.

Open source software has a lot of advantages over the stuff sold by big corporations, and the ClamWin antivirus program is closely connected to the Free Software Foundation. So put its malware detection abilities to the test, if you like, by downloading the security software at http://www.clamwin.com/

Impressive compatibility and a simple installer should make getting started with ClamWin Free Antivirus a snap.

Impressive compatibility and a simple installer should make getting started with ClamWin Free Antivirus a snap. Viruses and malware can turn your computer from a useful machine to a heavy hunk of plastic and metal. Make sure this doesn't happen by using AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition.

Given an average of four stars out of five by almost 22,000 individuals (and a four-and-a-half stars by a CNET editor), AVG Free should provide all the protection a normal person needs. It's not too demanding in terms of resource use, either.
